Manual network selection is one of the basic troubleshooting steps you can do when your mobile phone is having problems with your service. This happens sometimes when your travelling and your phone will have to connect from one tower to another and will have a hard time connecting to some towers so manual network selection is necessary.

When your on roaming internationally and located in a country where your service provider has agreement to more than one network, manual network selection will be a great help as well. Unlike in your own country where you can only connect to your own service provider's network, when on roaming and having some trouble with the network where you phone automatically connects, you can switch to other carrier to get better service. Just make sure that you are aware of charges when your using your phone overseas cause it is normally more expensive than when you are using your phone in your home country.

The steps below will guide you on how to do the manual network selection on Apple iPhone

1. Press the Home button.
2. Tap on the Settings icon.
3. Tap on the Carrier option; "Searching...." will appear and may take a little while to appear with a list of carriers.
4. Tap a carrier other than your own network provider. This will try to connect then fail with the error "Network Lost"
5. Tap Dismiss to go back to the list or,  Settings for the phone to search for all carriers again.
6. Tap on Automatic or your service provider (It is recommended to always choose Automatic)
7. Switch the phone off and then back on or, toggle Airplane Mode ON then OFF. This may take a few moments to complete the process.

Hope this would help!
