Troubleshooting the Phone System
Before you start breaking your phone into pieces, lets figure out how we could fix it by yourself. Problem with mobile phones that most of us would normally complaint about just depend on how we use it.

Mobile phone or also known as cellular phone was invented for convenience in communication like for calling, sending and receiving Short Message Service (SMS) and nowadays it is also use for accessing internet, sending and receiving MMS and e-mail. But to be able for you to use those services, your phone needs to be connected to your network provider and have them activated on your mobile account. So if your phone is getting poor reception you would probably have a hard time using those services.
Problems  with mobile phones can sometimes be fixed just by doing some basic troubleshooting that we  always forget to try. So before contacting your service provider and waste your time waiting on the line for someone to answer your question, try doing the steps that I suggest below cause these are the things that your customer of your service provider will ask you to do.

    Power cycling

Just like any other electronic devices, power cycling will reinitialize the device configuration and restore from unresponsive back to functioning state. This also refreshes the connection of your phone to the mobile network. There are two types of power cycling which are soft and hard reboot.

Soft Reboot - the normal way you turn your phone off and on (see your handset's manual).

Hard Reboot - for most handsets, you just have to take the battery out and put it back in. But some phones' battery that can't be removed so you will have to press certain keys to hard reset it. Like for Apple iPhone, you have to press and hold the home and power button at the same time for about 5 - 10 secs. This step is normally done if the soft reboot won't work.

    Manual Network Selection

Manual network selection is a process of manually forcing the phone to reconnect to the mobile network. It is done by going to the network settings and manually search for available network operators (See your handset's manual to know how to manually search for network operators. Once you have the list of available networks, please follow the steps below.

    1. Select any network other than your own service provider. Your phone will then say "Requesting.." then "No Access" or "Network Lost". The reason behind selecting other network is just to disconnect your phone from the network of your own service provider.
    2. Go back to the list or search for available networks again then select the network of your own service provider this time. Your will phone will say "Home Network Selected" or just go back to the main screen of your phone and will start getting reception again.
    3. Sometimes after doing this step your phone will be up and running again. If not, please try power cycling it again or continue with the next step below.

    Check the SIM card

The Subscriber Identity Module or commonly know as SIM card can sometimes be the one causing the problem. This might be weird specially if you had your phone for a while and you didn't take that out since you put it in your handset, but it really happens sometimes. Check your SIM card by doing the steps below.
    1. Turn your phone Off
    2. Take the SIM card out and back in (most phones need to have the battery taken out first). Sometimes the card or the slot of it is getting loose and you have to reseat it to put back to its normal position.
    3. Turn your phone back On
    4. Test your phone if its working fine. If still not, please try the next steps.
    5. Try putting your SIM card into a spare handset to isolate if there is an issue with it. If your SIM card works with a different phone, that tells you that there is no problem with the SIM card or the network. But if not, you will need to verify with your service provider if account that is attached to that SIM card is still active and has no barring cause it might be the physical SIM card that became faulty and needs to be replaced.
